Dealing with a Pilot Light that Has Gone Out
Pilot lights have been commonplace in appliances like hot water heaters, furnaces and some stoves and ovens for many years. The small blue pilot flame is used to ignite the burners in these appliances when a demand is put on the system to put the appliance into use.
The fact that pilot flames can and typically do burn constantly for years upon end means that most homeowners are not experienced when it comes to lighting a pilot if the flame somehow does happen to become extinguished.
On the rare occasion that this happens, it is usually because a draft has blown the flame out. It is also possible that the cause is something more difficult to deal with, like an air bubble that forms in the line which stops the flow of gas. These days most systems have a fail-safe mechanism which detects that the pilot flame is no longer there and then shuts off the flow of gas. This is usually accomplished with the use of a thermocouple.
If you know what you are doing it is certainly possible to relight the pilot yourself. Lots of people who have never done this before will not feel comfortable with the idea of striking a match right next to a gas line. So it is probably best for most to seek the services of an experienced technician. One way to allay the costs is to go ahead and have an annual inspection done on your furnace. In that way you won’t have to pay a service call charge just to relight the pilot.
